Flight Schools

Author: Jennifer Bailey

There are a lot of flight schools in the United States, and choosing one to cater to your specific skill levels, schedule, and budget should not be too hard. These flight schools are all ready to accommodate people like you -- individuals who want to join the aviation community, take control of aircraft, and master the art of flying. Whether you want to establish a career as a pilot or simply want to fly recreationally, flight schools can help you.

The length of time it will take you to get a private pilot's license depends on how quickly you grasp information and develop skills needed for the job. On the average, students spend about 40 hours before they pass the test for licensing, but some students take about 70 hours.

Commercial pilot licenses take much longer to achieve, though. It usually takes at least 500 hours of flight school training before students can even apply for a license.

Flight schools charge on a per-hour basis. Expect to spend around $6,500 if you are only after a private pilot license. This already includes about 30 to 40 hours of dual, about 10 hours of aircraft rental, and some 20 hours of ground instruction.

If you want a degree in aviation to work as a commercial pilot, expect to spend as least $60,000. Some flight schools allow you to borrow 100% of all pilot school tuition, housing, and living expenses. You need to pay off this student loan after graduation, usually after a grace period of about three to six months.

Flight school will teach you, among other things, principles of flight, flight regulations, meteorology, navigation, radio communication, and flight instruments and facilities.

Flight schools require the students to bring an aviation medical certificate. This is to ensure that you are fit for the training.
